Une nouvelle usine pour transformer les déchets organiques en énergie à Montréal

Une nouvelle usine pour transformer des matières organiques en énergie renouvelable verra le jour en 2022 dans l’est de l’île: un investissement écoresponsable, mais qui s’avère beaucoup plus coûteux que prévu pour la Ville de Montréal.

La Ville a en effet accordé à l’unique soumissionnaire, SUEZ Canada Waste Services, un contrat de 130 millions $, un montant excédant de 30 % les estimations.

Ce centre de biométhanisation sera situé à Montréal-Est sur l’ancien site de la carrière Demix. L’exploitation et l’entretien, pour cinq ans, devraient coûter 37 millions $ par année.

La Ville négocie avec les gouvernements provincial et fédéral pour obtenir des subventions.

Au débat de l’année, SUEZ Canada Waste Services a reçu un autre contrat à un montant beaucoup plus cher que prévu, cette fois pour un centre de compostage dans l’arrondissement de Saint-Laurent qui doit être opérationnel en 2021.

60 000 tonnes

«Pas moins que 60 000 tonnes de matières organiques pourront être détournées de l’enfouissement», s’est tout de même réjouie jeudi la mairesse de Montréal, Valérie Plante, lors de l’annonce de l’investissement pour un nouveau centre de biométhanisation

L’énergie générée serait suffisante pour alimenter 3600 résidences, selon Mme Plante. Cela dit, elle servira à chauffer une usine d’épuration d’eau. Des économies de 2 millions $ sont anticipées.

Les matières organiques des quelques 1,47 million de résidents de l’est et de la ville-centre aboutiront au centre de biométhanisation.

Moins de 30 % des matières organiques sont présentement récupérées à Montréal, soit en deçà de la cible provinciale de 60 %.

Évolution des coûts

L’administration Coderre avait lancé des appels d’offres pour cinq centres de traitement des matières organiques. Estimée à 345 millions $, la facture aurait plutôt totalisé 589 millions $. Cette planification est en train d’être réexaminée, d’après les fonctionnaires.

Au gré de l’évolution des technologies, la facture peut grimper, a reconnu Mme Plante.
